155 Days until Opening Ceremonies

This Story

FIRST-CLASS DIGS

China showed just how seriously it is taking its role as a host to the world when the first arriving passengers to Beijing's newest airport terminal -- which opened last Friday and whose ceiling features a lattice-work of glass panes and steel beams -- were greeted with bouquets of flowers and a performance by 10 string musicians. The 14 million-square-foot terminal and ground-transportation center, which includes more than 60 restaurants and 90 shops, was designed to handle the expected increase in travelers as the Olympics approach. It was built in just four years.

The welcome, however, ended at the airport. Chinese athletes swept all of the events in the second FINA Diving Grand Prix event over the weekend in Shenzhen, giving Chinese divers 16 gold medals in 16 events in the first two grand prix events. The first was in Madrid.

U.S. Roster Additions

Rebecca Snyder of Grand Junction, Colo., earned a spot on her fourth consecutive Olympic shooting team, winning the air pistol competition at the U.S. trials.

Four other slots were also filled: Stephen Scherer and Jason Parker in men's air rifle, Emily Caruso in women's air rifle and Jason Turner in men's air pistol.

Matt Emmons, a 2004 gold medalist in the prone rifle event, failed to qualify in air rifle. Emmons has already earned spots for Beijing in prone rifle and three-position rifle.
