COLUMBIA HEIGHTS TARGET STORE

Fenty Early for Opening

The District's first Target wasn't scheduled to open until today, but Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D) couldn't wait. He showed up at the store in Columbia Heights yesterday.

The Target-anchored shopping center is the culmination of a massive redevelopment of Columbia Heights. In addition to the mall, the additions include six apartment buildings, the restored and repurposed Tivoli Theater, the Dance Institute of Washington, a Giant supermarket and more than three dozen other new businesses.

Fenty told reporters that the shopping center would generate tax revenue and jobs, and "make the neighborhood safer." As if one news conference isn't enough, the mayor plans to return to Target on Saturday for its ribbon-cutting.
