Kindergarten students at Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School in Waldorf listened Monday morning as Rep. Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.) read from Dr. Seuss's "The Foot Book."
Hoyer, the House majority leader who represents Southern Maryland in Congress, was participating in the annual Read Across America event marking the birthday of the children's author Theodor Seuss Geisel. The celebration was started in 1998 by the National Education Association to help promote the love of reading among children.
"It cannot be overstated just how critical it is for young people to develop and practice their reading skills, not just in school, but every opportunity that presents itself," Hoyer said during his visit to the school.
