A 16-year-old Osbourn High School student conspired with fellow gang members during the past month to break into his house, steal two guns and kill his father, Manassas police said yesterday. Police announced the arrest of the teenager and other gang members and said they were continuing to look for another suspect.
The teenager, whom police did not identify because he is a juvenile, approached a school resource officer Tuesday with his father and said he had been beaten as part of a gang initiation, police said.
Further investigation showed that the teenager joined the gang after conspiring with members of a rival gang, to which he used to belong, to break into his home, steal guns and kill his father, police said. He switched to the second gang after becoming fearful of the first, police added.
Police charged the teenager and another 16-year-old with conspiracy to commit murder. A 17-year-old was also arrested on a burglary conspiracy charge.
In connection with the gang initiation, police arrested six members of a gang. Police said the suspects are five juveniles ages 14 to 17 and Dwaynne A. Smith, 18, of the 9700 block of Beech Place in Manassas. All were charged with gang participation, assault by mob, gang activity in a school zone and recruitment of a juvenile for a criminal street gang.
