Teen Charged as Adult in 4 Robberies on Escalator

Authorities arrested a teenager and charged him as an adult with four robberies that occurred last week on an escalator of the Columbia Heights Metro station, officials said yesterday.

Michael Richardson, 17, of the 900 block of Emerson Street NW approached victims with a gun and rode down the escalator with them into the Green and Yellow line station on 14th Street NW, according to charging papers in D.C. Superior Court. No one was hurt, police said.

Richardson is accused of stealing wallets and cellphones March 4 and 5. The charging papers said he told one victim, "I was going to shoot you," and another, "You're lucky you didn't get shot over this."

Metro Transit Police arrested Richardson on Monday. A judge ordered him jailed without bond pending a follow-up hearing today.
