Damascus High School's weekend production of the musical "Grease" was a thoroughly enjoyable performance.
"Grease" is a timeless story of teenagers seeking to find themselves amid influences from the many cliques at the fictional Rydell High School.
Sandy Dumbrowski (played by Colleen Francis) is the new girl at Rydell. On her summer vacation, she had a brief fling with Danny Zuko (Alex Freeman), one of Rydell's many greasers. They are both surprised to see each other at school, having told the other they were going somewhere else.
Sandy is immediately picked up by the Pink Ladies, a girls gang at the school, and does her best to fit in. The story follows Sandy and Danny's romance throughout the school year.
The acting was very strong from all the players, especially Mary Quinn as Betty Rizzo. Quinn brought style, poise and a very beautiful voice to her role as a tough gang leader who's dealing with significant problems.
Director Steven Kachadorian kept the action on stage evenly balanced despite the problems of working with an enormous ensemble cast. Sometimes the actors with lines got lost in the sea of chorus members, making it difficult to determine who was speaking from where. Still, it was great to see so many students involved in the show.
The stage design was excellent, and the orchestra dressed in period clothes, resembling the cast. That was a wonderful touch. The production also overcame a few technical difficulties. Overall, the performance was well done.
