MaryLynne Schaefer has never hit a bigger three-pointer in her career.

Schaefer connected from long range with 13 seconds left to put 10th-seeded Hartford ahead and then added a pair of free throws to give the Hawks a 59-55 upset of Syracuse in the first round of the women's NCAA tournament yesterday in Baton Rouge.

"It was plays we have drawn up in practice a lot, situations," Schaefer said. "I thought I had an open look and the thing went in."

It was her first game-winner ever, Schaefer said. She finished with a career-high 19 points, sending 10th-seeded Hartford (28-5) into the second round against Texas A&M tomorrow night.

Seventh-seed Syracuse (22-9) is winless in four NCAA appearances. Erica Morrow led the Orange with 17 points.

Hartford opened the game with a 10-0 run before Syracuse came back. The Hawks, who led 25-23 at the break, were outrebounded by a 47-33 margin.

TEXAS A&M 91, TEXAS-SAN ANTONIO 52: Morenike Atunrase had 19 points off the bench to lead the second-seeded Aggies (27-7) in Baton Rouge.

Monica Gibbs scored 14 points for No. 15 seed Texas-San Antonio (23-10), which committed 30 turnovers in its first NCAA appearance. The Roadrunners could not match up with the bigger, more athletic Aggies, who had 15 steals and six blocked shots.

Jayne Appel scored 29 of her career-high 33 points in the first half to help second-seeded Stanford roll to an 85-47 rout of Cleveland State in Stanford, Calif.

Appel shot 14 for 19, finished two shy of tying Stanford's NCAA tournament record and pulled down 12 rebounds in 25 minutes. The Cardinal (31-3) won its 19th straight game without relying on Pacific-10 career scoring leader Candice Wiggins, who had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Kailey Klein had 16 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the Vikings (19-14), the 15th seed playing with just nine healthy players in their first trip to the NCAA tournament.

BAYLOR 88, FRESNO STATE 67: Point guard Angela Tisdale scored 26 points and her taller teammates dominated on the boards as the Lady Bears romped in Albuquerque.
