[2] GEORGETOWN vs. [10] DAVIDSON
WHEN: 2:50 p.m. WHERE: RBC Center, Raleigh, N.C. (19,722). TV: WUSA-9, WJZ-13. TV ANNOUNCERS: Jim Nantz, Billy Packer. RADIO: WTEM (980 AM). RECORDS: Hoyas (Big East, at-large), 28-5; Davidson (Southern, champion), 27-6. WINNER FACES: Wisconsin on Friday in Detroit.
BACK COURT: The Hoyas readily admit they likely won't be able to completely shut down guard Stephen Curry, who scored 40 points on 14-of-22 shooting against Gonzaga. In 67 games, only one team has been able to limit the 6-foot-2 sophomore to fewer than 10 points (Duke in November 2006). This season, Curry averaged 19.6 points on 38 percent shooting in losses to North Carolina, Duke and UCLA -- down from his averages of 25.5 and 49.1, respectively. Defending him will be a team effort, and several players -- Jonathan Wallace, Jessie Sapp, Jeremiah Rivers, Chris Wright and Tyler Crawford -- likely will get an opportunity to shadow him. Davidson's "other" guard, senior Jason Richards, leads the nation in assists per game (8.1).
FRONT COURT: Davidson, which has no starter taller than 6-8, has not faced a player with the size of 7-2 Roy Hibbert. But Coach Bob McKillop said that the Wildcats learned some valuable lessons in early season losses to UNC (Tyler Hansbrough had 14 points and 14 rebounds) and UCLA (Kevin Love had 12 and 12). The Wildcats have capable rebounders, and can make teams pay for giving up offensive rebounds: Curry's final three-pointer against Gonzaga, which put Davidson ahead for good, came off of an offensive rebound by 6-8 Andrew Lovedale, his sixth of the game.
BENCHES: Senior Patrick Ewing Jr. had 10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals in 21 minutes against UMBC, and even displayed some post moves as he filled in at center for Hibbert. The Wildcats relied heavily on their five starters against Gonzaga; their bench totaled six points.
COACHES: John Thompson III is 7-2 in the NCAA tournament with the Hoyas, and has not lost to a lower-seeded team. His first road win as Georgetown's coach came at Davidson on Nov. 30, 2004, and he still considers that 76-51 victory to be among the biggest of his tenure. Davidson is in the NCAA tournament for the fifth time in Bob McKillop's 19 seasons. The Wildcats' 82-76 victory over Gonzaga was their first in the tournament since 1969, when Lefty Driesell was coach.
