Kwame Kilpatrick hit a superlative mark in 2001 when he was elected as Detroit's youngest mayor at 31, but since then his time in office has been full of controversy -- apart from the affair related to the charges he currently faces.

The Detroit Police Department confirmed that the city spent nearly $25,000 to lease a luxury SUV for the mayor's family in the midst of the city's budget crisis.

Kilpatrick was named one of the worst mayors in the country by Time magazine.

Kilpatrick wrote Detroit a check for $8,879.41 to reimburse the city for some personal expenses he had charged to a city-issued credit card. Records obtained by the Detroit Free Press showed that the mayor had charged more than $210,000 for travel, meals, an $85 bottle of champagne and other items.

At his annual State of the City address, Kilpatrick criticized his opponents and the media as part of a "lynch-mob mentality."

The City Council voted 7 to 1 in favor of a nonbinding resolution asking Kilpatrick to resign.
