A weekly playlist for the listener with a one-track mind.
Snoop Dogg: "Cool (Chew Fu Fix)" Snoop's new cover of the Time hit gets a judicious tweaking, remains awesome.
Men Without Pants: "And the Girls Go" What prompted this collaboration between Dan the Automator and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's Russell Simins? Are they really not wearing pants? In either case, we're not sure we want to know. One thing we are sure of: If the "Cannonball"-era Breeders ever mated with the Black Keys, this is what it would sound like.
Death Cab for Cutie: "I Will Possess Your Heart" Sure, it begins unpromisingly (with a four-minute long instrumental -- and this is the single). And yes, it's the sort of regretful and winsome yet vaguely accusatory love song Ben Gibbard can do in his sleep. But a middling new Death Cab song is almost certainly preferable to no new Death Cab song at all.
Black Joe Lewis: "Gunpowder" This Austin blues enthusiast and Spoon compatriot does the best imitation of James Brown since Eddie Murphy in "Delirious." We can understand about five words of this crackling, horn-happy track -- just like with James Brown!
Basia Bulat: "Touch the Hem of His Garment" Canadian singer-songwriter/South by Southwest festival sweetheart/champion belter Bulat really is as good as you've heard: His cover of the Sam Cooke gospel classic is all the proof you need.
