Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Doug Davis has thyroid cancer.

"We don't know much, other than he does have thyroid cancer," team president Derrick Hall said yesterday. "It's saddening. It was a complete surprise to the entire organization, and to him."

Hall said Davis, 32, would still take his regular turn in the rotation April 3 in Cincinnati.

Davis is expected to undergo surgery on April 10, Hall said.

"There is a chance he won't be ready this season," Hall said. "He's in a terrific frame of mind."

¿ TWINS: Minnesota left-hander Francisco Liriano will start the season in the minors. Coming off elbow surgery that cost him all of last season, Liriano was 2-2 with a 4.02 ERA in spring training. He is scheduled to start for Class A Fort Myers on Thursday.

¿ PADRES: Center fielder Jim Edmonds was placed on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, with a strained right calf. Edmonds, 38, has 362 home runs in 15 seasons.

¿ WHITE SOX: Chicago third baseman Joe Crede missed an exhibition game because of a bruised left ankle, but hopes to recover in time for the season opener. He fouled a ball off the ankle on Thursday.
