Development Brings Upscale Options Down To the Harbor

"A lot of people think on April 25 [when Gaylord holds its official opening] everything is supposed to be in place," said David Byrd, Prince George's deputy chief administrative officer for economic development. "Things are going to be rolling out over the next few months."

In other instances, he said, it is clear that Peterson wants to make sure that each retailer fits into the vision for the project.

"National Harbor is saying, 'Tell us who they are, what they serve, what do they do,' which tells me there is a certain selectivity," Murphy said.

National Harbor has had some success in luring restaurants and retailers that have never been in Prince George's.

South Moon Under, an upscale retailer with stores in Annapolis and Bethesda, has signed on, as has Fossil, a national retailer of men's and women's accessories and clothing. Erwin Pearl Fashion Jewelry, which has 30 locations across the country, including one on Madison Avenue in New York, has also signed on.

National Harbor officials have been closed-mouthed about when shops and restaurants will open, saying that "retail and dining facilities will open throughout the year."

One of the few stores given an opening date is Art Whino, an art gallery from Alexandria, which will take up 3,000 of the 325,000 square feet dedicated to retail and restaurants in the first phase of the project.
