BALTIMORE, March 31 -- Orioles designated hitter Aubrey Huff paid the price for an insulting comment he made regarding the city of Baltimore during an offseason radio appearance, drawing boos before all four of his at-bats during his team's season opener at Camden Yards on Monday.
"It's around par for what I figured," said Huff, who finished 1-for-4 in a 6-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. "Like I said earlier, it was a mistake to go on and say the things that I said, but again, I'm human and I made a mistake. If I was a fan, I'd probably be the same way, have a few beers and boo me too."
Fans jeered Huff as he walked down an orange carpet during pregame introductions and continued to voice their ire in the bottom of the ninth inning, when he came to the plate with two outs and represented the Orioles' final hope.
Huff thought he might have bought some goodwill Saturday, when he wore a T-shirt that read "I Love Baltimore" to the team's annual Fan Fest event. But the fans in attendance Monday did not back off.
"I didn't get one negative comment at Fan Fest," Huff said. "I guess all those people at Fan Fest were the only ones not booing me today."
Albers Excels in Relief
Orioles right-hander Matt Albers made a strong first impression Monday, pitching 2 2/3 perfect innings in relief of starter Jeremy Guthrie.
"That's probably the best I've seen from Albers with his location all spring," Orioles Manager Dave Trembley said. "He didn't throw one ball above the thighs. Everything was down and his breaking stuff was sharp and late." . . .
The Orioles signed infielder Alex Cintr¿n to a minor league contract Monday before assigning him to Class AAA. The Orioles had looked at acquiring Cintr¿n early in spring training as another option at shortstop, where Luis Hern¿ndez eventually won the job. Cintr¿n, a defensive specialist, spent last season with the White Sox and batted .243 in 68 games.
