CAUSES There are four kinds of dengue virus. All are transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue cannot be spread human-to-human.
FREQUENCY Tens of millions of cases are reported worldwide each year. The disease is common in warm, wet areas where mosquitoes breed. Increased urbanization has contributed to its spread.
TREATMENT No specific treatment or medication is available.
PREVENTION Risk of exposure can be minimized by eliminating standing water, avoiding mosquito-infested areas and using mosquito repellent.
