Classical music from international orchestras highlights the 2008-09 season at George Mason University's Center for the Arts.
Officials at the center announced plans yesterday for performances by the Kirov Orchestra, conducted by Valery Gergiev, on Nov. 14; the National Philharmonic of Russia under Vladimir Spivakov on April 21; Great Britain's Academy of Ancient Music under Richard Egarr on March 22; and the Dublin Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Derek Gleeson, on Feb. 6.
Several presentations of Shakespeare are also on next season's schedule: On Oct. 4, Shakespeare & Company will present "Hamlet"; the Aquila Theatre Company offers "The Comedy of Errors" on Nov. 7; and the Acting Company stages "Henry V" on April 25. Also appearing at George Mason will be L.A. Theatre Works, which on Feb. 20 presents a staged radio drama of "The Great Tennessee Monkey Trial," based on the famous 1920s case of science teacher John T. Scopes.
The dance program will include performances from the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Parsons Dance, Philadanco and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Classical dance will be represented by the Russian National Ballet Theatre, which will perform "Cinderella" on March 20 and "Sleeping Beauty" on March 21.
Cultural traditions from around the world will be represented by the Song and Dance Ensemble of West Africa, Ballet Flamenco José Porcel, fado singer Mariza, Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, Trinity Academy Irish Dance, Canada's Cirque Eloize and the National Acrobats of China.
Four Italian works will be performed by the Virginia Opera, including Verdi's "Il Trovatore" on Oct. 17 and 19; Donzetti's "The Elixir of Love" on Dec. 5 and 6; Puccini's "Tosca" on Feb. 13 and 15; and Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" on April 3 and 5.
Other music programs include Doc Severinsen, "Drumline Live," the Turtle Island Quartet, Sérgio and Odair Assa, Cherryholmes, and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra.
The season will open Sept. 21 with pianist Jeffrey Siegel's "Keyboard Conversations." A gala fundraiser will feature Tony Award winner Brian Stokes Mitchell on Sept. 27.
The Center for the Arts is on the Fairfax campus of George Mason at Route 123 and Braddock Road.
