BALTIMORE, April 4 -- Upon his arrival at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Friday afternoon, Sam Perlozzo found his way to the home clubhouse just fine. But from there, he needed some help finding his final destination.
"I needed directions," Perlozzo said of the visiting clubhouse. "I had been there before; it just took me a little bit."
Perlozzo spent 12 years in the Baltimore Orioles' organization in various capacities, the last two years as the manager, before he was fired last June amid clubhouse unrest.
"I'm not going to let the last four weeks or five weeks of my time here in Baltimore take precedence over the good times that I had," said Perlozzo, in town as third base coach of the Seattle Mariners. "I had some great times here."
Perlozzo, a Maryland native, admitted that Orioles players did not show an outpouring of support upon his return, though he seemed to take the reaction in stride.
After several months of reflection, Perlozzo said he has come to terms with his dismissal.
"I quit beating myself up over it because I said 'You know what? You were prepared, you did the job, you cared for your players, you did what you thought was right for the organization,' " Perlozzo said. "I really believe there wasn't much else I could have done at that particular time to change what needed change around here. I came to grips with that."
Hitting Catchers
Perhaps it was a good day to be a catcher for the Orioles -- anywhere. In Baltimore, Ramón Hernández went 3 for 4 with a homer and two runs scored. Meantime, about 50 miles to the west, catcher Matt Wieters hit two home runs in his professional debut with the Class A Frederick Keys. Wieters was the Orioles' first-round draft pick last year.
