Five runners sprinted toward the finish line of the Carlsbad 5000, and Alan Webb wasn't among them. In fact, he wasn't even close.

The American mile record holder, a South Lakes graduate, dropped out about a half-mile before the finish of the 3.1-mile road race yesterday in Carlsbad, Calif., his legs dead and hurting too much to even jog in.

Terefe Maregu Zewdie of Ethiopia sprinted the final 50 meters to win in 13 minutes 34 seconds, and Vivian Cheruiyot led a 1-2-3 Kenyan finish in the women's race, winning in 15:14.

Webb, 25, is beginning his push for a second straight berth on the U.S. Olympic team. . . .

Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede and Kenya's Martha Komu won the Paris Marathon in the rain and wind. Kebede, competing in this race for the first time, finished in a personal best of 2:06:40. Komu won in 2:25.33.

· COLLEGE LACROSSE: Freshman attackman Travis Reed, the leading scorer for the Maryland men's lacrosse team, will not play against Johns Hopkins on Saturday after his suspension for a violation of the university's student-athlete code of conduct. Reed also missed a 5-4 loss to Navy last Friday.

As first reported by the Diamondback, the Maryland student newspaper, Reed was arrested and charged with a DUI and possession of marijuana early Thursday morning.

"I made a mistake and I am sorry I let my teammates, coaches and fans of the Maryland men's lacrosse program down," Reed said in a statement released by the school yesterday.

· AUTO RACING: The British tabloid newspaper accusing Formula One president Max Mosley of taking part in Nazi role-play with prostitutes said it will send videotapes of the encounter to the sport's governing body.

There was no immediate response from Mosley, who did not attend the race in Bahrain amid calls for his resignation. . . .
