HARARE, Zimbabwe, April 7 -- New York Times correspondent Barry Bearak was released on bail from a jail in the Zimbabwean capital Monday, but suffered an accidental fall in prison that seriously injured his back, the paper said.
Bearak was one of several foreigners arrested in the past week as President Robert Mugabe struggled to keep power following a historic loss in elections March 29. Zimbabwe has banned most foreign journalists, forcing news organizations to work in the country illegally or try to cover the elections from abroad.
A British journalist arrested with Bearak on Thursday was also released on bail. Police arrested seven election workers Monday amid signs that Mugabe was resorting to authoritarian tactics to try to win a runoff against opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Bearak was hurt when he fell from a seven-foot-high cell bunk, the New York Times said. He was reportedly being treated in a Harare clinic Monday night and has a court date Thursday.
