Varied Interests and Goals for High School Scholars
Anthony Villaflores, a senior at Laurel High School, is the Prince George's County school system's Scholar of the Week. He has a cumulative 3.9 grade-point average and has taken Advanced Placement courses in literature, American government, language, world history and calculus. He also has taken International Baccalaureate art, is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a tutor during his school lunch break.
Villaflores plans to pursue a degree in illustration and animation at Maryland Institute College of Art. He has used his art skills to help beautify his school's campus by painting outdoor benches, painting a mural in the Career Center and decorating the junior and senior halls. He also designed the senior graduate T-shirt. His chalk painting was featured in The Washington Post when he was in the fifth grade, and his "Shoe Illustration" was shown in the Maryland Gallery. He also has traveled to the United Kingdom as a student ambassador with the People to People program.

Stephanie Onuoha, a senior at Largo High School, was last week's scholar. She has a cumulative 3.895 grade-point average and has taken Advanced Placement courses in psychology, chemistry and language. She also has taken pre-calculus and honors world history. She is enrolled at Prince George's Community College, where she is taking English 101 and 102.
Onuoha is president of the Justice League Advisory Board and the school's National Honor Society; former vice president of the Spanish club; a member of Mentoring to Manhood Inc., Mind Builders English, the National English Honor Society, the Key Club, the softball team, the poetry club and Future Business Leaders of America. She is a math tutor and senior class ambassador. She also is active in her church, where she is in the choir, the Liturgical Dance Group and the Liturgy of the Word and Hospitality ministries.
Onuoha plans to pursue a career in education at Case Western Reserve University. She was accepted at 11 other colleges and universities, including the University of Dayton, Towson University, Wesleyan College and Hampton University.
She has completed more than 300 hours of community service. She has written for the youth section of Catholic Standard newspaper and writes for the Olde Mill Newspaper of the Kettering-Largo community.
