· First used: Introduced in modern Olympic Games in 1936 in Berlin, put on by Adolf Hitler's Third Reich. First used for the Winter Olympics in 1952 in Oslo.

· Where lighted: In Olympia, Greece, at original site of the ancient Games. The flame is lighted a few months before the upcoming Games by focusing the sun's rays in a parabolic mirror.

· Is the torch ever extinguished?: It is put out each night and when it is being transported by plane. But the flame from Olympia is kept in a traveling lantern and is used to reignite the torch.

· Does the torch design change?: The torch is redesigned for every Olympiad. The torch for this year's Beijing Games was designed by Lenovo, a computer manufacturing firm.
