Catherine A. "Kate" Kent, 44, who taught mathematics at St. Luke Elementary School in McLean and Wakefield High School in Arlington, died of a pulmonary embolism March 30 at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington.

Mrs. Kent also was a private math tutor and taught at Suitland High School during her career here.

She was born in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and grew up in Buffalo. She graduated from Erie Community College and received a bachelor's degree from SUNY Buffalo. She also received a master's degree in education from Canisius College about 1990.

She taught in Buffalo before moving to North Virginia. She lived in Arlington for 16 years.

Mrs. Kent was active in her children's school activities, including the PTA, sports teams, and boy and girl scouting events. She was known for adding a special touch to everything she did, family members said.

She was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Arlington.

She enjoyed sewing, travel and camping.

Survivors include her husband, Jeff Kent of Arlington; three children, Christopher Kent, Abigail Kent and Timothy Kent, all of Arlington; her parents, Patrick and Barbara Roche of Buffalo; a brother; and two sisters.
