Some examples of product names or policies of retailers that have been considered offensive.

This Story

Sambo's

The restaurant chain took its name from "The Story of Little Black Sambo," a children's book written in 1899 by Helen Bannerman. But critics said the term was a pejorative for black people. Financial mismanagement shriveled the chain from 1,200 outlets to one in the early 1990s.

Hooters

Critics charged the restaurant chain with discrimination for hiring only shapely young women as waitresses and dressing them in tiny shorts and tight white T-shirts. The owners successfully fought the charges.

Washington Redskins

The name of the National Football League team, like the names and logos of other sports teams that refer to American Indians, has been criticized. Some teams, such as those of St. John's University in New York, have adopted new names. Others, like the Redskins, have not.
