Spring is a nose's best friend. Each year, the season pulls our sniffers out of winter's doldrums with nature's sweet smells -- of grass, freshly turned dirt, budding blossoms -- that have emotional and olfactory heft. Memories of those scents last a lifetime.
Who knew an awakening Earth could be so swoon-worthy? And you can find that feeling in a perfume.
The best ones can bottle many things and preserve them: a feeling, an experience, a vision, an era. And what better thing to capture now than this season when our fine city is at her shimmering best? L'Occitane's new limited edition Cherry eau de toilette is an ode to the fresh, fruity scent of cherry blossoms. Romantic stroll along the Tidal Basin, anyone?
The daisy, that cheeriest of springtime flowers, gets a touch of violet and gardenia from perpetual "It" designer Marc Jacobs, whose Daisy perfume is enticingly feminine. The celadon-green bottle for Annick Goutal's Petite Cherie eau de toilette, embellished with a serigraph of sweet cherubs and gold pears, is sweet and tart at the same time, much like the peach, pear, musk rose and grass in the perfume. A hint of leather tugs at the floral bouquet of Hermes's Kelly Caleche, terrific for those outdoorsy types who like to mix softness with horsey verve.
Vivara, Pucci's signature almond and jasmine scent, smells like sunbathing on the deck of Ari Onassis's Mediterranean-bound yacht.
And Lavanila's Vanilla Coconut, made from pure essential oils, bridges the spring/summer gap nicely by combining coconut, vanilla bean and monoi tiare, a Tahitian white flower. It makes the nose say, "Goodbye spring showers; hello beach cabana!"
