Donations of more than $1.8 million since 1998 include royalties from McCain's books. Income of $256,898 for 2006 and 2007 came from earning for the autobiographical "Faith of My Fathers," "Why Courage Matters" and three other books.
The John and Cindy McCain Foundation in 2007 donated $78,250 to nonprofits with which the couple are connected through their children. The HALO Trust, the British charity that specializes in the removal of the land mines and was a favorite of Princess Diana's, received $25,000. Cindy McCain recently returned from a trip to Kosovo, where she promoted the trust's efforts employing 7,000 mine clearers in nine countries.
Also, the McCains' foundation donated $10,000 to the Craniofacial Foundation of Arizona. It provides emotional and financial support to patients with abnormalities of the face or head caused by a birth defect, accident, tumor or other medical condition. McCain's daughter, Bridget, was born with a cleft palette.
The McCain foundation gave $4,000 each year to the senator's church, the North Phoenix Baptist Church, and a small amount to Xavier College Prep, the school McCain's daughter, Meghan, attended before heading to Columbia University.
The foundation returns show that the McCains have given generously to Phoenix schools where the McCain children studied. Xavier previously has received $50,000; Brophy College Prep received $267,000; Christ Lutheran School got $128,000, and the Phoenix Country Day School received about $42,000.
