BALTIMORE, April 18 -- During the monotony of spring training, Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts said he felt engulfed by rumors of a trade to the Chicago Cubs. But with the regular season underway, and with Roberts still wearing an Orioles uniform, he said he feels a sense of relief that talks regarding his future have cooled.
"I know where I'm going to be on a nightly basis now, at least," Roberts said. "It is a relief because I think everybody wants stability in their life, but I understand that doesn't always happen. If it comes up again, I'll deal with it."
Roberts said he hasn't thought about the trade, which never materialized, since Opening Day. But he accepts that questions about his future may once again intensify as the season unfolds and the trade deadline nears.
"It was an interesting time and it might be again later, eventually," said Roberts, who entered Friday hitting .279 with five steals. "But for now, it's fine. Now, I'm just enjoying baseball."
Two Fans Hurt
Two fans were injured at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on Thursday night when one fell from the second deck onto the other in the lower bowl. The Orioles and the Maryland Stadium Authority are investigating the incident, which occurred on the first base side of the stadium shortly after the game's conclusion. The two were released from a hospital last night. . . .
Reliever Fernando Cabrera (right elbow surgery) is expected to pitch on Tuesday in an extended spring training game at the team's minor league complex. . . .
Former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Steve McNair threw out the ceremonial first pitch on Friday, one night after announcing his retirement.
