The Rules
Energy producers in 25 states and the District have minimum requirements for the share of electricity that will come from renewable sources. Here are some of those rules:

| Massachusetts | 4% | 2009 |
| Maine | 40% | 2017 |
| Montana | 15% | 2015 |
| New Jersey | 22.5% | 2021 |
| New York | 24% | 2013 |
| North Carolina | 12.5% | 2021 |
| Oregon | 25% | 2025 |
| Pennsylvania | 8% | 2020 |
| Virginia | 12% | 2022 |
