Roman Catholics who are unhappy with Archbishop Donald W. Wuerl's decision to secularize and convert to charter status seven Catholic schools in the District should take charge of their charity dollars ["Why Is the Church Abandoning Them?," Close to Home, April 20].

When Archbishop Wuerl decided to abandon inner-city minority youths, I decided to abandon him as middleman for my charitable donations. Clearly, our interests no longer coincide. There will be no contribution to the Archbishop's Appeal from me in this or any other year; that money will instead go to worthy Catholic enterprises that provide educational alternatives for disadvantaged urban youths, such as Washington D.C.'s Missionaries of Charity and the start-up Serviam academy for at-risk girls in Wilmington, Del. It will be money well spent.
