Georgetown, Howard Agree to Four-Game Series in Football

The Georgetown and Howard football teams have agreed to a four-game series that will begin on Sept. 6 at Howard. The division I-AA schools have not met in football previously.
"I have seen both schools play over the years and as a Washingtonian, I always wondered why we were not playing each other," Howard Athletic Director Dwight Datcher said.
The schools will take turns hosting the game through 2011. Georgetown, a member of the Patriot League, went 1-10 last season. Howard, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, went 4-7.
"Our players and our staff are very excited about the opportunity to play Howard," Georgetown Coach Kevin Kelly said. "This will be a tremendous challenge for our team, but it is a series that can be very good for college athletics in the District." . . .
Dan Radakovich, the assistant head coach at Robert Morris and an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers' first two Super Bowl-winning teams, is retiring after 48 years as an NFL or college coach. He is 72.
· PRO FOOTBALL: The Denver Broncos acquired defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson from the New York Jets for a conditional pick in the 2009 draft. Robertson, the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft from Kentucky, spent five seasons with the Jets. He often seemed out of position in New York's 3-4 alignment.
· COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Virginia Commonwealth and men's basketball coach Anthony Grant have agreed in principle to a contract extension and raise that would keep Grant at the helm of the Rams through the 2013-14 season, the school said. . . .
Alabama State player Deshean Porchea collapsed and died after playing in a pickup game on campus. The 19-year-old sophomore passed out Wednesday afternoon after walking off the court and never regained consciousness, the university said.
· TENNIS: Roger Federer beat Gael Monfils of France, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters in Monaco.
The top-ranked Federer will play sixth-seeded David Nalbandian, who routed No. 12 Tommy Robredo, 6-1, 6-0.
Also, three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal beat Juan Carlos Ferrero, 6-4, 6-1; and Sam Querrey of the United States upset No. 7 Richard Gasquet, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
· SOCCER: Khano Smith scored in the 72nd minute to help the New England Revolution beat FC Dallas, 1-0, in an MLS game in Frisco, Tex.
New England improved to 3-2-1, and Dallas dropped to 2-1-2.
· FIELD HOCKEY: The U.S. women defeated India, 4-0, at an Olympic qualifier in Kazan, Russia, all but clinching a spot in the tournament final. The Americans must win the tournament to qualify for the Beijing Games. The U.S. team plays Netherlands Antilles tomorrow and would have to lose by more than double-digit points to be eliminated from the final.
