Connolly Gets Two Unions' Endorsements

Gerald E. Connolly, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, announced yesterday that he has received the endorsements of two major unions in his quest for the Democratic nomination in the 11th Congressional District.

Connolly faces three opponents in the June 10 primary: former congresswoman and state lawmaker Leslie L. Byrne, Iraq war veteran Douglas J. Denneny and physical therapist Lori P. Alexander.

Connolly and Byrne have battled intensively for campaign contributions and endorsements, particularly from labor and left-leaning issues organizations. Both have racked up long lists of support from elected officials and civic organizations.

Byrne has claimed an advantage with organized labor, receiving endorsements from more than a dozen unions, including the Communications Workers of America and the Virginia chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees.

Connolly leveled the playing field significantly yesterday, gaining the endorsements of the Service Employees International Union and the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, two large organizations that are likely to help him in the increasingly Democrat-leaning district.

Seven Are Arrested in Prostitution Raid

Prince William County police said yesterday that they raided a house of prostitution in Manassas and made seven arrests.

Charged with frequenting a bawdy house were José E. Cubias-Reyes, 26; Eric M. Aguilera, 33; Ariel S. Moya, 22; Israel Díaz-Díaz, 44; and Edson N. Lino-Cardenas, 33. All live in Manassas or Manassas Park. They were released on a summons and are to appear in court June 6.
