Emilio Stuck in a Drought
"That's the way it works in this business. He'll work his way out of it."
For tactical reasons and because of injuries, Soehn has experimented with different tandems and formations. In starting all eight games overall, Emilio has been paired with Quaranta, team captain Jaime Moreno and newcomer Franco Niell. He has also been part of a three-man arrangement in which Brazilian Fred joined the front-runners.
Complicating matters was the arrival of Argentine playmaker Marcelo Gallardo, who offers a strikingly different style to his predecessor, Christian Gómez, and is still adapting to a new team.
"It's just a matter of Luci developing confidence again," assistant coach Mark Simpson said. "He didn't score 20 goals in the league for nothing and when you go through a dry spell, it's like a goalkeeper letting in a lot of goals. It's just a matter of building blocks and, for him, not trying to score three goals at once."
United Notes: Defender Gonzalo Peralta, sidelined early in the week with a sore knee, returned to practice and will probably start.
However, midfielder Devon McTavish, who started the first four league matches but injured his right foot and ankle last week, is not available. Quaranta is the top candidate to fill in. McTavish said he expects to be ready May 4 at Colorado.
Reserve midfielder Domenic Mediate (hamstring) did not practice yesterday and seems doubtful to play tonight. . . .
United has lost three of four matches in Salt Lake City, but is 2-0-1 against Real at RFK with an 8-3 scoring advantage.
