CHICAGO, April 25 -- One day after two fans eluded security personnel and ran onto the field in Seattle -- delaying the start of the bottom of the ninth against the Mariners -- Baltimore Orioles Manager Dave Trembley lashed out against the unruly behavior.
Speaking before his team's rained-out game on Friday, Trembley called the incident at Seattle's Safeco Field "embarrassing to baseball." Trembley said he grew more upset after one of the fans came too close to some Orioles players.
"I am a big proponent of respect, and that's probably the epitome of disrespect when two idiots run out on the field like that," Trembley said. "I wish I could have taken them in the back room. I would have kicked the snot out of both of them. I'm serious. You think I'm kidding you. I don't have any patience for disrespect."
One of the fans came up behind outfielder Jay Payton.
"If the guy would have bumped me or ran into me, then yeah, it could have gotten real ugly," Payton said. "And it would have been even uglier for him because our bullpen was right there. He just waved his hands up in the air behind me. Once I realized he was there, he was already by me. He didn't do anything to me, so it wasn't like I was going to chase him down or something."
Rain Forces PostponementThe Orioles and White Sox played just six minutes -- enough for Chicago starter Mark Buehrle to retire Baltimore in order -- until Friday's game was postponed by heavy rain. The game will be made up with a day-night doubleheader on Saturday.
Brian Burres, who retired one batter before the rain came, will oppose John Danks in Game 1. Steve Trachsel faces Nick Masset in Game 2. Buehrle will start Monday.
