Other area players who could be selected early in the June 5-6 MLB First-Year Player Draft:
RHP Jesse Beal, South County: The 6-foot-7, 220-pound University of Maryland recruit has struck out 40 with five walks in 29 innings this season. Fastball tops out at 88 mph, and opponents are batting .149 against him. Scouts like his size and how he projects.
RHP Kevin Brady, Gaithersburg: Limited early in the season by tightness in his shoulder, the Clemson recruit has allowed two earned runs in 22 innings with 42 strikeouts and six walks. Expected to be picked in first 10 rounds.
OF L.J. Hoes, St. John's: Scouts love his combination of skill and athleticism and expect the University of North Carolina signee to be picked in the first three rounds. He's batting .551 with seven doubles, three triples and eight homers. Also has stolen 28 bases in 31 attempts.
LHP Scott Silverstein, St. John's: Tendinitis in his throwing elbow will keep Silverstein from taking the mound this season. Could the University of Virginia recruit go as a position player, batting .407 with 7 homers and 31 RBI entering this week?
