These are highlights from last week's Virginia Politics blog, http:/
Del. Robert G. Marshall (R-Prince William) has raised $52,000 for his U.S. Senate bid in the first quarter, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.
His rival, former governor James S. Gilmore III, has raised $396,000. Probable Democratic nominee Mark R. Warner, also a former governor, has brought in $2.5 million.
Marshall, who will compete with Gilmore for the Republican nomination at a convention this month, spent more than $32,000 during the reporting period and had almost $20,000 on hand.
"I'm going after delegates, not dollars," Marshall said.
Gilmore has declined to debate Marshall this month in an event sponsored by three Young Republican clubs in Northern Virginia.
"We're past the point of debate," said Ana M. Gamonal, Gilmore's spokeswoman.
Gamonal said Gilmore's schedule is packed until the convention.
She noted that Gilmore and Marshall have appeared together many times, including the recent Shad Planking in Wakefield.
"Delegates already know where Governor Gilmore stands on the issues," she said.
Gamonal said Gilmore's goal is to get delegates to turn out and to find out how Warner thinks.
