Washington & Old Dominion Trail Patrol needs members to serve as on-scene ambassadors of safety, courtesy, information and good will. Adult trail users, including cyclists, walkers, runners, skaters, carriage pushers, dog walkers, horse riders or wheelchair users, are eligible to apply. There will be orientation sessions 2-4 p.m. May 3 at Raflo Park in Leesburg and 10 a.m.-noon May 17 at the Vienna Community Center. Literacy Council of Northern Virginia needs tutors to help adults learn to speak, understand, read and write English. A tutor is trained, matched with a student and encouraged to meet with the student weekly for 90 minutes. Training will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. May 3, 10 and 17 at the James Lee Community Center, 2855 Annandale Rd., Falls Church. A $35 fee covers books, other materials and instruction. Palestine Children's Relief Fund, a nonpolitical humanitarian organization established to provide lifesaving surgery for children in need, will have an open house orientation for potential volunteers from 1 to 3 p.m. May 3 at Oakton Library, 1304 Lynnhaven Pl. Fairfax County Police Department is looking for county residents age 55 and older to serve on Seniors and Law Enforcement Together councils. These councils aim to enhance the relationship between law enforcement and senior residents and intensify police response to crime-related issues experienced or feared by older residents. Potential members should be willing to express their concerns about crime issues and may be asked to share police-related information with their peers. The councils will be based in police districts, with meeting times and spaces coordinated with district officers. Training will be provided.
