Workers Memorial Started
National labor leaders gathered Monday to break ground for a workers memorial on the campus of the National Labor College in Silver Spring.
The memorial, which will honor workers who have lost their lives on the job, will be built in the center of the campus and will feature a brick plaza surrounded by granite benches and pavers. Names of workers will be put on the bricks.
"I can think of no more appropriate place for a permanent workers memorial than on the campus of the college that the labor movement calls its home for learning, ideas and reverence for all that is union," National Labor College President William E. Scheuerman said in a statement.
The groundbreaking was a part of Workers Memorial Day activities at the college. Officials there are accepting contributions to help pay for the memorial.
Bethesda's Maiden Park
Montgomery County park officials and residents on Saturday celebrated Maiden Lane Urban Park in Bethesda, the 400th park in the county's system.
The park, about one-third of an acre, includes benches and a trail. The land, previously slated for use as an extension of Maiden Lane, was acquired by the county in 2006.
