West Virginia men's basketball coach Bob Huggins signed a contract yesterday that will keep him at his alma mater through at least age 65.
The contract will pay the 54-year-old Huggins $1.5 million per year, plus incentives.
"It's a great day for myself and for my family," Huggins said. "To be able to represent this great state is an honor."
Athletic Director Ed Pastilong said the contract keeps Huggins at West Virginia "for the remainder of his coaching career" and it's possible the contract could go beyond age 65.
"This is a good marriage," Pastilong said.
The contract includes a $4 million buyout, the same amount the university is suing former football coach Rich Rodriguez for after he left for Michigan in December. . . .
Tennessee sophomore forward Duke Crews and sophomore guard Ramar Smith are being dismissed from the team.
Coach Bruce Pearl would not provide reasons for the dismissals, though he did say that the two cases were unrelated and they stemmed from problems over a period of time rather than one specific incident.
ยท COURTS: Former track star Tim Montgomery is scheduled to appear in federal court in Norfolk on Monday for a bond hearing on heroin distribution charges.
The 33-year-old sprinter was arrested Wednesday on a sealed indictment accusing him of dealing more than 100 grams of heroin in Virginia over the past year.
Montgomery was being held at the Portsmouth city jail pending the hearing in federal court. U.S. marshals brought him in Wednesday night.
