An earlier version of this article incorrectly indicated that Public Broadcasting Service anchor Jim Lehrer lives in Boston. Lehrer's recent heart surgery was performed in Boston, but he lives in Washington.

They Call the Bride Mariah

After much speculation -- Is that an engagement ring on Mariah Carey's finger? (and, a few days later) Did she really marry actor Nick Cannon ("Drumline," Nickelodeon's "All That") after less than two months of dating? -- it seems the rumors are true: Carey, 38, obtained a marriage license on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, People magazine reports. She and Cannon, 27, reportedly tied the knot at Carey's Windermere Island estate Thursday.

Reps for the couple have not confirmed the nuptials, but on Thursday, Linda Cannon, identified as a relative of the groom's, told E! News that a wedding indeed had taken place: "He called and told us all about it. . . . I'm not going to give you any details, but we are happy for him."

This would be Carey's second marriage (she split from music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1997) and Cannon's first, although he was engaged to Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks last year. That time, however, Cannon showed restraint, waiting almost four months to propose.

Snipes, Not Taxed by Court Fight

Wesley Snipes won't go quietly -- to prison, that is. Attorneys for the 45-year-old actor have filed notice in Ocala, Fla., that he plans to appeal his federal conviction on tax charges, the Associated Press reports.

Last week a judge sentenced the action star to three years in prison on three misdemeanor counts of willful failure to file his income tax returns. The two-page appeal notice, filed Thursday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, does not specify what argument Snipes's attorneys intend to make.

For now, Snipes -- who in February was acquitted of five other counts, including two felonies -- will remain free until the Federal Bureau of Prisons orders him to surrender.

Thurman Testifies at Stalking Trial

Uma Thurman gave some unsettling testimony this week at the New York City trial of Jack Jordan, a Gaithersburg man accused of stalking the actress for two years, according to the AP.

Thurman testified yesterday that Jackson sent odd e-mails to her parents and once delivered notes to her on a movie set that included images of an open grave, a razor blade and a photo of a bride with the head torn off.

Jordan's attorney said that his client loves Thurman and would never hurt her, and that Jordan, diagnosed as bipolar and schizophrenic, should receive psychiatric treatment, not a jail sentence. Jordan faces up to a year in jail if convicted.

'NewsHour' Anchor Is on the Mend

PBS "NewsHour" anchor Jim Lehrer, 73, is back home and doing fine after heart surgery, "NewsHour" rep Anne Bell said yesterday.

Lehrer underwent a successful heart-valve procedure last week and was visited by Judy Woodruff and other colleagues before heading home to Boston to recuperate.

"His wife is having to hold him back and insist that he rest, but we expect him to be back to the show in a matter of weeks," Bell said.

End Notes

Hitched: Actors Jason Biggs, 29, and Jenny Mollen, 28, were married in a "very private" ceremony last week, People reports. The couple met in 2007 on the set of "My Best Friend's Girl" and got engaged in January.

Quoted: "I have had a lifetime policy and practice of not discussing my personal and private life, or the personal and private lives of others." -- Former U.S. senator Edward Brooke, when asked by the Associated Press if it was true that he had an affair with Barbara Walters in the 1970s, a claim Walters makes in her upcoming memoir, "Audition." Ever the politician, Brooke added: ". . . with the notable exception of what I wrote in my recently published autobiography, 'Bridging the Divide: My Life.' " (Which, in case you were wondering, doesn't mention Walters.)
