OAKLAND, Calif., May 5 -- Left-hander Adam Loewen and the Baltimore Orioles received encouraging news on Monday when an exam with noted orthopedist James Andrews revealed no structural damage in Loewen's pitching arm.

Manager Dave Trembley and team president Andy MacPhail expressed relief that Loewen isn't expected to miss more than eight weeks.

"Obviously, we're pleased that there isn't anything that is demonstrably wrong," MacPhail said. "That's good news. We'll get Adam started in Sarasota and get him back on track."

Loewen, 24, who had surgery to insert a titanium rod into his left forearm last season, went on the 15-day disabled list on April 25 with left elbow soreness. He is headed to the team's spring training facility in Sarasota, Fla., where he will spend two or three weeks on a throwing program.

"I'm glad for him and I'm glad for our team and the organization because he's a central figure in what we're trying to do here and he's one of the guys that we're trying to do it with," Trembley said.

Base-Running Gaffe

Trembley voiced his displeasure with Ramón Hernández's base-running goof at Los Angeles on Sunday. He was thrown out at second base after going into a home run trot, thinking he cleared the left field wall with a long drive.

"It may be a part of what's going on in the major leagues now, with guys somewhat styling it when they hit it," Trembley said. "But it's not acceptable with me, it's not acceptable with what we're trying to do, or the direction we're trying to go." . . .

Left fielder Luke Scott was out of the lineup for the fourth time in five games because he is fighting flu symptoms.
