What a Week! D.C.'s Celeb Bonanza

There are celebs and then there are stars. Spring fundraisers always bring boldface names to Washington -- some more A-list than others.

Hard to top Sunday's Kennedy Center Spring Gala. The $2.7 million party boasted Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and John Williams-- all Oscar winners and recipients of the center's Honors -- for a salute to movie music. The three presented a crowd-pleasing mix of clips ("Lawrence of Arabia," "Doctor Zhivago," "Jaws," "Indiana Jones," "E.T."), commentary and film scores. Williams got the night's biggest laugh by repeating his favorite Spielberg line: "I said, 'Steven, you really need a better composer than I am.' He said, 'I know, but they're all dead.' " Ba-da boom.

Adding to the glitz: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, who skipped the pre-show dinner for 1,200 but slipped into front-row seats just before the performance. No chance to mingle, though: The duo arrived via a side door and were immediately whisked away by security at intermission and after the show to hang out backstage. (TomKat: 1, paparazzi: 0.)

Hard acts to follow. The rest of this week's lineup: Jeff Daniels and Marlee Matlin here tomorrow to flack their new movie, Patti LaBelle at the Lupus Foundation Awards, Mariska Hargitay at the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship and Wynton Marsalis at the Capitol Jazz Project. Patty Duke comes to the Women of Vision Awards on Thursday. Best Friends nabbed Chuck Brown, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr . , and the Drifters on Friday; across town Maya Angelou will celebrate her 80th birthday. Oh, and Cuba Gooding will pop up Saturday to screen his new movie. Wonder if they'll mingle?

HEY, ISN'T THAT . . . ?

· Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal dining at Zaytinya Sunday evening. She was here to officiate at the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer earlier in the day; he apparently just tagged along, which is a sign that he's totally into her, don't you think? Reese: spring dress and short trench. Jake: casual T-shirt. They split the octopus and the lamb, but he had the snail all to himself, since she didn't touch it. Emilio Estevez showed up later with a party of 12 but never intersected with his Hollywood compatriots.

· Michael Hayden cheering on the Nats Friday night from some prime seats just a couple rows behind the dugout. The CIA director's ballpark beer of choice: Miller Lite.

LOVE, ETC.

· Engaged: Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds, breaking hearts of middle-aged men everywhere. The 23-year-old actress/sex kitten and her 31-year-old actor/boyfriend (once engaged to singer Alanis Morissette) have been dating for more than a year. No wedding date yet, said her rep; the "Lost in Translation" star was expected to show off her engagement ring at last night's Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute gala in N.Y.C.

HILARY, GETTING THE TOP-10 TREATMENT

Equal time! Barack Obama delivered his second Top-10 list on the "Late Show With David Letterman" last week, but never fear -- the senator from New York got her chance last night with "Top 10 Reasons Hillary Clinton Loves America." Highlights:

· We have more Dakotas than every other country combined.

· Canadian bacon: soggy and chewy; American bacon: crisp and delicious!

· TiVo.

· Thanks to the Internet, I can order new pantsuits 24/7. There's your pantsuit joke, Dave. Are you happy now?

WEDDING WATCH

Four days until Jenna and Henry tie the knot -- no detail too small!

· The couple will marry outdoors near a lake on the Crawford ranch. "We put a giant cross made out of Texas limestone that will serve as the altar, but also serve as a landmark on our place for years to come," President Bush told "Good Morning America" yesterday.

· Maid of honor Barbara Bush will wear a long, soft blue silk gown with a fluttered open back. "It really matches Barbara's eyes," said designer Lela Rose. The dress, like others for the wedding party, is accented with a silver sash.
