Special Counsel Scott J. Bloch has taken several controversial actions:
· In early 2007, he announced a probe of White House aide Karl Rove, after a scandal over the firings of U.S. attorneys and a series of White House briefings at which political appointees were told which Republicans were in tight election races.
· In a June 2007 letter to President Bush, he accused then-General Services Administration chief Lurita Alexis Doan of "engaging in the most pernicious of political activity." He urged Bush to discipline her "to the fullest extent" for violating the Hatch Act by calling on political appointees to help Republican candidates. Doan resigned last week.
· In July 2007, he accused the Federal Aviation Administration of covering up air controllers' errors by reclassifying them as pilot mistakes.
