WHERE TO STAY: The Liberty Hotel (215 Charles St., 617-224-4000, http://www.libertyhotel.com; nightly rates from $295 ) underwent a $150 million renovation in 2007 that transformed this former jail into one of the city's most luxurious hotels. The Beacon Hill property has oversize rooms, some with sweeping views of the Charles River, and a popular bar and restaurant called the Clink and Alibi. The Clarendon Square Inn (198 W. Brookline St., 617-536-2229, http://www.clarendonsquare.com; from $175) sits in the heart of the South End, a charming neighborhood full of cafes, restaurants and galleries.
