Tips from the pros on how to make the most of a crooked house:

Paint

· Choose low-gloss paints: matte for walls and up to an eggshell finish for trim.

· Avoid high contrast by choosing similar colors for trim, ceilings and walls. Interior designer Nan Knisley recommends taking the wall color and diluting it to 25 percent to use on the ceilings. This won't work with very dark colors or with greens, which cast an unflattering light when used on ceilings.

· If you want a glossier finish, consider a specialty technique such as Venetian plaster, which can be more forgiving to imperfect walls.
