Kim Is Poised for Another Run at the Top
Perry managed to avoid most disasters, playing bogey-free until his back nine when he missed an eight-foot par putt at the 237-yard No. 8. He was in full scramble mode all day, missing seven fairways and 10 greens, but kept his round alive with just 24 putts.
Perry has had only two top-10 finishes in 19 appearances in this event, but said he went to Fred Funk's house on Wednesday night and was motivated by seeing Funk's trophy for winning here in 2005 at age 49.
"That guy inspired me," Perry said. "He's something else, that little guy. . . . I've been playing okay this year, just haven't been able to put four rounds together. My golf swing feels really good and I'm putting beautifully for a change. If I can somehow fight that wind and pick the correct shot, it's going to be fun this weekend, I think."
Kim had a delightful weekend when he ran away with the Wachovia title last Sunday, the youngest player to win on tour since 2002. His first two days here, he played with Boo Weekley (71-141), also his playing partner Saturday and a good friend who gave Kim a scare Friday as they walked off the eighth tee.
Kim was playfully tapping a snapping turtle on the top of his shell when Weekley came by and hissed at him, as if the turtle was about to snap at Kim.
"He got me pretty good," Kim said. "I don't know much about wildlife . . . so he scared me pretty good. I think that's why we probably both missed those five-footers [for birdies] on that hole."
Kim hasn't been missing much over the last two weeks. He said he drove the ball as well as he has in his last five rounds on Friday, and only a balky putter on at least four birdie putts inside 10 feet kept him from going much lower. Still, after his girlfriend's scary accident last month, "I don't let those things really bother me much" he said earlier in the week.
His maturation process, he said, also "has changed a lot in the last couple of months. I'd say I'm a hard working person, and the people who know me the closest know I'm a humble person. Being No. 1 is a goal of mine, and I'm going to work my hardest to get there."
