Discussion Policy
Comments that include profanity or personal attacks or other inappropriate comments or material will be removed from the site. Lengths of protective orders
Maryland: Up to one year; a six-month extension is possible.
Virginia: Up to two years.
District: One year; an extension is possible.
Standards for obtaining protective orders
Maryland: Clear and convincing evidence of abuse.
Virginia: Preponderance of evidence.
District: Preponderance of evidence.
Gun regulations
Maryland: A judge cannot remove guns while a temporary order is in place. Guns may be removed under a final order; there are exemptions for rifles.
Virginia: Guns cannot be bought or transported during any order of protection. A court may order that guns be confiscated.
District: A judge may order the removal of guns.
