Until Friday night, Matt Chico never had pitched in relief. His two innings against the Marlins, though, might have ensured more opportunities. Chico worked two innings, allowing two hits and no runs -- a vast improvement on his numbers as a starter (0-5, 6.87 ERA).

QUOTABLE

"That's the best I saw him throw all year. That was a very encouraging outing, and I give him credit. I give Manny [Acta] and Randy [St. Claire] credit; they fought to put him in the bullpen. I wanted to option him out."

GM Jim Bowden, on Chico
