On the way to Election Day 2008, the following has happened:

Barack Obama wore a flag pin Monday, and the nation craned its neck to see. Look! A flag pin on the guy who said he doesn't like to wear a flag pin! What does it mean? That he has heretofore refused to pander, only now he's suddenly pandering? That he's heretofore been unpatriotic, only now he's suddenly patriotic? That on this issue he can't win? (Probably.) That he would have been better off if he'd never called flag pins a "substitute" for "true patriotism?" (Definitely.)

"Like many of his Senate colleagues, including Senator McCain and Senator Clinton, sometimes he wears a flag pin and sometimes he doesn't," said campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki, like it was no big deal, just another casual, unscripted moment on the Road to the White House.
