William Dudley, former director of the U.S. Naval Historical Center, will speak at the annual meeting of the Friends of JPPM. His lecture, "The Onset of War on the Chesapeake: 1812-1813," will highlight events leading to what is often called America's Second War of Independence; what happened in the war's first year; and the struggle between U.S. and British forces in the Chesapeake Bay region during this period.

The lecture will follow a brief business meeting starting at 7 p.m. in the visitor center, 10115 Mackall Rd., St. Leonard. Light refreshments will be served following the lecture.

The speaker series is co-hosted by the Calvert Marine Museum. For information regarding this and upcoming lectures, call 410-586-8501, visit http://www.jefpat.org (click on "Visitor's Guide") or e-mail jppm@mdp.state.md.us.

Maritime Heritage Festival

All things nautical will be celebrated on the banks of the St. Mary's River on June 14 as Historic St. Mary's City hosts the sixth annual Maritime Heritage Festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This year, the festival will be followed by "An Evening on Aldermanbury Street." After hours, visitors can enjoy a casual dinner and music under the stars on the State House green.

During the day, there will be a variety of hands-on activities and entertainment. Visitors will be able to sing a chantey, knot a line, smile at a jollyboat or sit on a sloop, and learn about underwater archaeology and boating safety.

Music will be performed by the Ship's Company Chanteymen and Charlie Zahm, with fiddler Tad Marks. Skipjack Dee of St. Mary's will depart at 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. for one-hour river cruises.

There is a surcharge for the boat ride, and reservations are recommended.

Admission to the museum is free for Friends members. Otherwise, tickets for adults are $10; seniors, $8; students, $6; and ages 6-12, $3.50. The charge for the skipjack cruise is $15; children, $10.

To make a reservation for the cruise or the evening activities, call 240-895-4960 or e-mail pmarneson@smcm.edu.
