Cubs Agree to a Deal With Edmonds
The Cubs agreed to a contract with 37-year-old OF Jim Edmonds yesterday, five days after he was released by the Padres.
Reed Johnson has performed well in center and Hendry said Edmonds will have to earn playing time. To make room for Edmonds, the Cubs optioned OF Felix Pie to Class AAA Iowa.
Edmonds flew to Chicago yesterday and then passed a physical and will be in uniform today when the Cubs wrap up a four-game series with the team that let him go.
An eight-time Gold Glove winner and four-time all-star, the 37-year-old Edmonds strained his right calf in a spring training game on March 6 and started the season on the disabled list. He was activated on April 5 and batted .178 in 26 games with one homer and six RBI -- well below his .286 career average.
ยท OWNERS MEETING: After a toughened drug agreement was passed unanimously by baseball's executive council, Bud Selig expects an easy path to ratification when owners meet today.
"We have no controversy. None," the baseball commissioner said yesterday as the two-day session began in Milwaukee.
Players and owners have until May 23 to ratify the drug agreement their negotiators signed off on last month. The deal increases the frequency of tests and the authority of the program's independent administrator.
Selig, however, didn't want to discuss this week's new indictment of home run king Barry Bonds, charged Tuesday in federal court with 14 counts of making a false declaration to a grand jury and one count of obstruction of justice. Bonds has denied knowingly using performance-enhancing drugs.
"It doesn't go away," Astros owner Drayton McLane said.
