Unlike Lastings Milledge, Elijah Dukes and Wily Mo Peña, outfielder Austin Kearns started every game in the four-game series against New York. But Kearns, who will turn 28 on Tuesday, now has a lower average than all of them (.192). His 0-for-3 game yesterday prolonged a slump in which he has one hit in his last 22 at-bats. He has just one extra-base hit all month -- a home run on May 6 against Houston. Manager Manny Acta said again this week that he's certain Washington won't go much longer with the lowest average in the majors, but for that hope to come true, it will require some assistance from the everyday right fielder.
