America's Most Walkable Cities

Sunday, May 18, 2008

During our online chat (most Mondays at 2 p.m.), you ask and we answer your travel questions -- mostly. Here's one we couldn't get to last week.

I'm interested in finding out about pedestrian-friendly places in the United States. Do you know anyone who has done a survey of walkable cities?

The gold standard, as far as walkable cities surveys go, is the one conducted annually by Prevention magazine in partnership with the American Podiatric Medical Association. You can find the complete list at http://www.prevention.com/bestcities. The winner for 2008 was Cambridge, Mass., followed by New York City; Ann Arbor, Mich.; Chicago; and -- coming in at a very respectable No. 5 -- Washington, D.C. And what was the worst American city for walking, according to Prevention? Sorry, Oklahoma City. -- S.V.
